Why there is no universal formula
Limescale deposits depend on water and usage. Machines differ in materials, water pathways, heating systems and maintenance design. A method suitable for a simple kettle may therefore be unsuitable for an espresso machine. Some appliances provide user programmes; others require certain work to be done by specialist servicing.
First find the exact model name and the matching instructions. A similar-looking machine from the same manufacturer is not enough. Also check whether an installed water filter changes the procedure and whether it must be removed for it. Follow the instructions here, rather than another household's habits.
Set water hardness correctly
If your machine has a water hardness setting, determine and enter it according to the manufacturer's instructions. An incorrect value can make reminders inappropriate. Water filters also have a limited service life and must be fitted or replaced correctly. A filter is no reason to ignore maintenance instructions in general.
Distinguish between your local supplier's information and the water you actually put in after treatment. If you are unsure how to set your system, ask the equipment service team. Guessing from flavour or visible marks is not an accurate measurement.
Before the programme
Have the approved product ready and read the dosage, water quantity and safety instructions. Allow enough time for the full process. Have a sufficiently large collection vessel ready and keep children and pets away. Clearly mark the process so nobody accidentally dispenses a drink.
Do not mix different cleaners. Vinegar, citric acid or other household remedies are not automatically suitable for every material and temperature. The cheapest liquid can cause an expensive repair if used incorrectly. If the manufacturer prescribes a particular procedure, follow it.
Rinsing is part of it
Complete the specified rinsing cycles too. An interrupted process is not finished simply because the appliance can be switched on again. Dispose of the solution according to the product instructions and clean the containers used. Afterwards, check that the machine works normally and no warning remains.
If liquid leaks, unusual noises occur or the programme stops progressing, do not improvise with more chemicals. Stop according to the manual and contact servicing. With leaks or electrical problems, taking the machine safely out of use comes before the next espresso.
Keep a maintenance history
Record the date, product and any issues immediately after completing the full descaling procedure. Keep filter changes as separate entries because they are a different task. Also record the set water hardness if your machine uses that setting. When contacting service, you can then describe the actual maintenance history rather than estimate the last date from memory.
Finally, check that your care schedule matches actual use. Even a rarely used appliance needs appropriate water and hygiene routines; a heavily used one may need more frequent attention. The Academy can explain the process, but cannot replace your machine's manual.
