Cleaning is more than descaling
Coffee residue builds up in the basket, portafilter and accessible brewing areas. Limescale, by contrast, comes from the water. A descaler is therefore no interchangeable substitute for coffee oil remover, or vice versa. Use products only for their intended purpose and according to instructions.
With a portafilter machine, a clear routine after every use helps: dispose of the grounds, clean the basket and care for accessible surfaces appropriately. The machine determines exactly what may be rinsed or brushed at the group head. Take care around hot components and escaping water.
Backflush only suitable machines
Backflushing closes the normal outlet with a purpose-made blind basket. Suitable machines discharge water through an internal pressure-release route during the specified cycle. This cleans areas that a normal extraction does not rinse in the same way. Not every espresso machine is designed for this. Use a blind basket, cleaner and programme only with explicit approval for your model.
The amount of cleaner, cycle duration and subsequent rinsing are also specific to the machine. A universal figure from the internet is less useful here than the right manual. Avoid the idea that more powder cleans better. Cleaning-agent residue must be fully removed according to the instructions.
Baskets and portafilters
Dismantle only the parts intended for it. Check holes and outlets for deposits. Use suitable brushes and approved products, not aggressive improvised tools. Handles and coated parts cannot automatically be soaked in the same way as an all-metal basket.
Rinse thoroughly and check for smells and visible residue before brewing again. If a basket is damaged or misshapen, cleaning does not replace repair. A clean, intact set-up also makes troubleshooting uneven shots easier.
Care for the steam wand immediately
Milk residues are easier to remove straight after steaming than later. Wipe the wand with a clean, suitable cloth and purge it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not also use the milk cloth for worktops, floors or other dirty surfaces.
Removable nozzles and automatic milk systems need their own care. Steam alone is not blanket proof that every area is clean. Especially after a longer period without use, check the specified cleaning process before the next drink.
A simple care plan
Distinguish between tasks after use and more thorough care. Remove fresh milk and coffee residue immediately. Further cleaning cycles follow the manual and frequency of use. Keep suitable products in stock so an empty cleaner container does not lead to weeks of postponement.
Note unusual noises, leaks or changes in flow. If a problem cannot be resolved through the prescribed care, servicing is the next step. Do not open pressurised or electrical parts for an impromptu kitchen repair. A clean workflow helps, but does not replace professional servicing.
